SCHOOL EXCURSIONS TO THE MEMORIAL

The Memorial is seeing an increasing number of schools attend for excursions. In the first half of year 2002, a total of 700 students went through the Memorial Walkway.

School excursions are generally structured. Students are given an overview of the Memorial on arrival and introduced to Kokoda Veterans. To maximise understanding of the historical accounts of the New Guinea campaign along the Walkway, students are formed into groups led by a Kokoda Veteran. Students are encouraged to explore and read the material displayed, and at the same time learn from the Kokoda Veterans who are all now in their early eighties.

Students are treated to morning tea and given a worksheet prior to departure to further consolidate their learning experience.
